Ofsted Report

It’s official: Shene School has made significant improvements in just one year and is on track to continue: “Progress made, in a short time, demonstrates a good capacity to improve in the future”.  Ofsted paid a visit to the East Sheen School at the end of November and quickly decided that the school had moved to offering a Satisfactory standard of education across all sections, with 11 of the 22 sub-categories being designated Good.  These included the capacity to make further improvements, learners’ enjoyment, and the curriculum.  Inspectors told the Leadership Team, Governors and the Local Authority how much they enjoyed being in the school, and would have liked to have stayed longer to get to know staff and pupils better.  They spoke of a “shared sense of a school moving forward”, quoting a parent: “There has been a dramatic improvement”. They found that the clear agenda for improvement set by the senior team and shared among all leaders had led to the improvement and promotion of high quality care and education.

They describe significant improvement on the previous year, better teaching, an enhanced curriculum and improving target setting and academic guidance. “Teachers have good subject knowledge and expertise, and provide good role models for their students”. Writing of the curriculum, they say it has “developed significantly to provide (students) with clear pathways that will enable them to gain qualifications and skills for future life”.

They state: “Shene has good community cohesion and a harmonious atmosphere.

They state: “(Students) are given many opportunities to develop responsibility and the school works extensively, and successfully, with many community partners.

They state: “Most students have an enthusiasm and pride in their school and the way that it is improving, and enjoy their education”.

They state: “Students say they are well looked after and feel supported in making choices about the courses they study and life beyond the school…The school provides a caring and supportive environment”. They describe the good transition arrangements in place and quote a Year 7 student: “This is the best school ever!”

They state: “ Students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is good. Older students eagerly contributed to a philosophy masterclass observed during the inspection, reflecting the students’ positive attitudes to school and their work”.
