About Religious Studies:

Religous Studies is all about making sense of life, who we are and what is our purpose? Indeed is there any purpose? Religious Studies is about the human quest for meaning.

Key Stage 3:

In Year seven we look at the foundation beliefs, facts and figures of six religions, followed by an in-depth study of Jesus: Who was he? What did he do? What did he say? What do people say about him? Finally the pupils work on a project looking in detail at either Islam or Sikhism.

In Year eight we look at the life, work and beliefs of Gandhi followed by an indepth study of Hinduism. We finally look at the key aspects of Christianity.

In Year nine we study the life of Nicky Cruz; a gang leader who becomes an international evangelist. The question of good and evil is examined focussing on liberation Theology and leaders such as Oscar Romero. There is a unit on death asking questions about life after death and what religions have to say.

Key Stage 4:

Year ten looks at issues such as relationships, issues of justice and equality, looking for meaning, identity and belonging and finally exploring creation and our place in the world. Pupils sit an exam at the end of the year worth half a GCSE.

In Year eleven, pupils look at religion and conflict, religion and medicine, religious expression, issues of law and order in religion and society and issues of innocent suffering and the concept of evil. At the end of the year, pupils sit an exam covering this year’s work to provide the other half of the GCSE. There is no coursework for this course.
