Welcome to the Mathematics Department

The Mathematics Department consists of four specialist teachers working together to ensure the following:

  • To create a learning environment in which all pupils are able to grow in confidence while actively engaging in mathematical tasks and activities.
  • Pupils are expected to engage in mathematical discussions in order to learn from each other and to learn to communicate using appropriate mathematical language.
  • Pupils are encouraged to take pride in all their work as it may be used for classroom displays. The department has six interactive whiteboards and maths software such as Excel, Omnigraph and programmable graphical calculators to enhance the teaching of maths.
  • Teachers use a variety of teaching styles which include teacher led, individualised, group work, worksheets, SEN support and at times different textbooks
  • Teachers support and monitor pupils marking in class as this encourages pupils to take responsibility for their own learning.

At Shene we offer a mathematics curriculum which provides equal opportunities for all pupils to achieve their full potential. The Maths department has recently moved to its new state-of-the-art block with interactive whiteboards in all classrooms.

The Maths groups are set on ability from Year 7 through to Year 11.

Members of the Mathematics Faculty:

Mrs J. Lawal - Director of Mathematics Faculty

Ms Bowden - Deputy Director of Mathematics Faculty

Mr Cullum - Year 11 Leader / Teacher of Mathematics

Mrs Wallace - Teacher of Mathematics

KEYSTAGE 4:

Pupils follow either the Higher or the Foundation course leading to the GCSE examination.

The department uses the Edexcel examination board.
Grades available at the Higher tier are A* - D.
Grades available at the Foundation tier are C - G.

The GCSE Statistics course is offered to all pupils at the end of Year 10

Publications

Maths frameworking at KS3: Pupil books 1, 2 and 3

Maths Frameworking workbook

Heinemann publishes the textbooks used in KS4 and their web address is: www.heinemann.co.uk.

Homework:

All teachers are expected to set homework twice a week. Homework is set to extend pupils’ knowledge, to practise work learnt in class and to reinforce understanding of new skills.

KS3 pupils should spend at least 30 minutes per homework, and KS4 40-50 minutes.

Extra Curricular Activities:

Pupils in Year 7 to 10 are encouraged to take part in the UK Mathematics Challenge Competition in order to develop their problem solving skills.

We have achieved good results and this year we had a candidate go through to the second stage called the Kangaroo stage.

Pupils in Year 7 and 8 also attend the Borough Maths Challenge with keen interest.

Pupils in Years 9 to 11 have the opportunity to attend Maths Master Classes, organised in partnership with St Paul’s School.

All pupils are encouraged to attend a weekly maths club rich in activities or simply to seek support with homework.
