Welcome to the English Department
We believe the skills students learn in English are crucial to success at school and in future life. The aim of the English department is to work successfully as a team to create and deliver a stimulating, varied and challenging curriculum for all our students. We want our students to enjoy their lessons, and we aim to create an environment which will foster a love of literature, debate and discussion.
All teaching rooms in the English Department are located in Hertford Building and are equipped with interactive white boards.

Key Stage 3 English:
Year 7
In Year 7 students have 3 English lessons a week. An extra literacy booster session each week is timetabled for those who need it.
The curriculum covers:
- Animal Poetry
- Autobiography
- Greek Myths
- An Introduction to Shakespeare
- A class novel- Underground to Canada
- Newspapers
- Travel Writing
- Creative Writing
- A modern play- Blood Brothers or Our Day Out
Year 8
Year 8 students currently have 4 English lessons each week. Again, certain students have an extra literacy lesson to develop key reading and writing skills so they can access the whole school curriculum.
The more able students may be fast-tracked to allow them to do their SATS in Year 8.
The Year 8 Curriculum covers:
- A Midsummer Nights Dream
- Writing in the Media- Advertising or Journalistic
- Contemporary Poetry
- Persuasive Speeches
- A novel- Holes
- Film analysis
- Short Stories
Year 9
In Year 9 our students have three lessons a week. The curriculum is carefully planned to challenge students as they consolidate the skills needed for their Key stage 3 SATS.
The Curriculum covers:
- A class novel
- Changing Hearts and Minds-Writing to argue, persuade and advise
- A Shakespeare play- Romeo and Juliet
- The Gothic Tradition- Imagine, Explore and entertain
- Exam Skills in preparation for the SATS
- Creative Writing-an Introduction to the GCSE
Key Stage 4 (GCSE) English:
Year 10 and 11
This is a two-year course preparing for two GCSE examinations: English and English Literature. Assessment is based on terminal examination and coursework. Literary texts include pre and post 1900 prose and poetry, a Shakespeare play and modern drama. Texts from diverse cultures and media are also studied. 20% of the course is allotted to Speaking and Listening; pupils are also given opportunities to produce a range of writing.
At Shene we follow the AQA English GCSE syllabus. Areas covered are:
- Non-Fiction
- Speaking and Listening
- Poetry from Other Cultures and Traditions
- A Shakespeare Play
- A media Text ( Film)
- 20th Century Fiction- Of Mice and Men
- 20th Century Drama- An Inspector Calls or The Crucible
- Pre-20th Century Prose- Frankenstein
