WELCOME TO YEAR 9!
I’m pleased to welcome everyone to Year 9 at Shene School. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new students and I am sure that they will soon settle in and enjoy their school life with us.
Year 9 is a very important year at Shene School. During this year all Year 9 students will sit their ‘Pathways’ exams in the core subjects, which are used as a guide to determine which option pathway a student will be offered. Below is an outline of the various pathways available at Shene School.
| Levels Achieved in Pathways exams | Pathway offered | Opportunities |
|---|---|---|
| Level 6/6/5 | Yellow | 9-13 GCSEs or equivalent |
| Level 5/5/4 | Pink | 8-10 GCSEs or equivalent |
| Level 4 or less | Blue | 5-8 GCSEs or equivalent |
Throughout the year we will be working closely with both students and parents to ensure that students choose the option that suits both their academic ability and their aspirations. In the new year we will hold a Target Setting Evening, a Parents’ Evening, and each student will be invited to a Pathways interview with their parents and a senior member of staff.
It is vital that all pupils work as hard as they can in all lessons, at all times. Some students will already be embarking on their GCSEs in Science and History. In order for pupils to achieve their potential they must attend school every day mentally and physically prepared to work their hardest. How they work in Year 9 will impact on their future.
Please help support your child by ensuring they have 100% attendance at school, always complete their homework and arrive at school with the right equipment and the right books in which to complete all their work.
If we work together we can ensure Year 9 is successful and thus lay a positive foundation for Years 10 and 11 when they complete their GCSEs.
I wish all the students every success for Year 9!

Information for Parents/Carers:
The school planner is a vital channel of communication for teachers and tutors. Occasionally a teacher may write a comment or a reminder in the planner and for this reason tutors check the planners every Tuesday. Parents are asked to sign the completed page to confirm that they have seen the diary and are satisfied with it and to confirm that the homework has been completed to their satisfaction. I thank you for your support with this.
Organisation is essential for success. The minimum equipment needed by each student is three pens, a pencil and a ruler. We ask that parents regularly ensure bags are packed and equipment is provided. In addition, on days when P.E. is on the timetable students must bring their full P.E. kit. Each week there will be an equipment check and students will be required to stay after school if they are inadequately equipped.
Please note there will be Year Leaders Detention every Thursday for 40 minutes for those who arrive to school ill-equipped.
