My job is to support your child’s smooth transition from Primary School to Secondary School. I help to ensure that all Year 7 students reach their full potential, both in terms of their learning as well as in their personal and social development.

TRANSITION
The transition from Primary School to Secondary School is an important aspect of your child’s education. We at Shene School seek to ensure that not only are the lessons enjoyable, but also that students realise the high expectations that we have of them. In Year 7 students study English, Maths and Science (Core subjects) as well as other subjects such as Music, History, Art, Drama, Design and Technology, Geography, ICT, Religious Studies, Spanish and Physical Education (Foundation Subjects). Once students arrive in Year 7, there are many extra curricular activities that they can participate in. (See Activities Section)
The Year Team ensure that students start to make academic progress as soon as they start here in Year 7. This is measured by students’ KS2 data, from which we set challenging targets in the Core and Foundation. We monitor students regularly throughout the year by supporting them to acheive these targets.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/CARERS
The emphasis in Year 7 is on developing children with a well-rounded education, a healthy enthusiasm for learning, and respect for one another and the community.
1) Year 7’s start a programme that takes them right through to Year 11, preparing them in the best possible way for public examinations. A great deal of emphasis is placed on teaching students how to learn effectively, from note taking to examination techniques.
2) Homework is set regularly, and should be recorded in the diary so that parents are fully aware of the homework set. Regular homework from a young age helps build the discipline and organisation that is required to do well at public examinations and later in life.
3) Students are not permitted to leave school during the school day. This helps us to ensure their safety.
4) We know that school can be the happiest days of your life. We also know that for some students, there are days or weeks when they are not. Students are encouraged to speak openly with any member of staff they feel comfortable with about any personal or subject related matters. We do, however, encourage them to speak to their Form Tutor as the first port of call, then the Year 7 Leader (Mrs Roach) or Assistant Year 7 Leader (Ms Handley) if the problem needs to be taken further.
5) Parents/Carers are also encouraged to contact the Form Tutor as soon as possible should they think their child is having any problems. This will help us to be well equipped to deal with any issues in their infancy and bring some resolution to them.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
We warmly welcome Year 7parents/carers and encourage them to take an active role in their child’s educational development.
One way to do so is to become an active member of the PTA (Parent Teachers Association). This will be a good opportunity for you to give your input on how the school can further improve. If you want a bigger say in the running of the school, why not become a Parent Governor?
PUNCTUALITY AND ATTENDANCE
All Year 7 Students are expected to be in school from 8:30 a.m. through to the end of the final period, which is usually 2:50 p.m. During this time they are not allowed to leave the school grounds, and should attend every timetabled lesson.
If a student is unwell and unable to attend school, the parent/guardian should telephone the school Reception (open from 8:00am) on each day of absence outlining the reason for the absence and the expected duration if possible.
An absence note signed by the Parent/Carer should be handed in the day of their return. Any unexplained absence is initially raised with the student and then with the Parent/Guardian if necessary.
Year 7 takes pride in been one of the year groups with the highest attendance.
